The New Worlds SF series were collections of short stories. Sneakily, they don't advertise this on the front, but instead present their top story as if it were a novel on its own. The Day of Forever, Ballard's mystical view of a world no longer turning, uneasily straddles the space between Vermillion Sands and the apocalypse; a world of ambiguous motives, troubled sleep and threads of life dissolving into a greater, world-consuming end. The cover is by Langdon Jones, who was also the assistant editor (Michael Moorcock edits). To add to the SF family feel, the story inside is illustrated by J Cawthorn. |
